Thinking about a new GS. Have few q's
Hello everyone, I’ve been browsing around for quite some time, but this is my first post. I am seriously thinking about a new GS350 AWD and have few questions. I Currently drive an SUV here in Chicago so I’m opting for the AWD model.
1. How is Lexus’ AWD system compared to MB’s 4Matic or Audi’s Quattro? A copy of Consumer Reports gave the AWD version less than average reliability while RWD was above average and I’m not sure why. Have there been any problems associated with AWD?
2. Does anyone know if it’s possible to replace the wood on the steering wheel with leather? I’m not really feeling the wood trim in a sporty car. The console most likely wouldn’t be a problem but I’m not sure about the steering wheel.
3. What's up with the cassette player? It's 2008 not 1978.
4. When will Lexus introduce 2009 models and any info on possible changes or improvements?
Thanks for any help, Mark

I just decided to buy and custom ordered the car exactly how I want, which lexus will let you do. If you order it you can get all leather steering wheel and save 210 dollars, but you will wait about 90 days. Several people have posted that if you custom order the car they will not deal on the price, but I got mine 3k below MSRP. CR poor rating due to rattles and electrical issues, my understanding was that it had nothing to do with the actual AWD per se. Good luck with your decision. You may want to look at an Acura RL which is new this month. The SH-AWD is a slightly more sophisticated system.

1) i don't know about the 4matic, but given the history of the quattro, i really doubt if the lexus awd can top that. my 2 cents
2) technically you can, coz' the wood wheel is an option. but most gs350 probably comes with it. you can custom order, but might not get discount. ask your dealer
3) simple, ignore it. or get the is350/ls460
4) 08 is already a facelift, i doubt there will be much changes for 09. and no words yet at all for 09, too early
welcome to cl

I have not hear of any GS owners who had problems with their AWD system. I am not sure why CR rated the AWD lower, but I would just ignore it. The Japanese AWD systems are usually more reliable than the German ones.
The GS's AWD is pretty good, its not as good as the Quattro, but then, not too many AWD system are.
Depending on your region, here in the MA, all the non nav GS comes with the all leather steering wheel and the nav GS has the optional wood steering wheel.
Wait another 6 months and you will start to hear news on the 09 GS, but dont expect any major changes.
