I'm thinking the impact flapped the grill up and in allowing the raccoon up inside and then it flapped down again. It appears that it's not fully clipped in at the bottom in the first two pics.
Yeah, thats what exactly looked like it happened. The raccoon gets hit and then I guess the impact was so much that it pushed the grille down, thus breaking the sensor and then the raccoon gets stuck/trapped in between. crazy, but true.

I hate racoons, they always get in my garbage and hiss at my dog. When I see one, I try to hit it but theyre quick. You didnt even mean to and looks what happens.
