Default Got 34.6 MPG today with my GS350 AWD...............

I filled up right next to the freeway this morning and drove a 40 mile trip. I babied the acceleration and set the cruise to 55 mph. When I arrived at my destination right off the freeway my Car reported a MPG of 34.6

Quite remarkable with a Car with 305 hp.

34.6 from the TANK AVG computer? If so, that's not realy an accurate count. Try calculating the whole tank after a fill up and the total miles you drove to see what you are actually averaging.

It is easy to cheat the computer TANK AVG to yield higher mileage. You can travel somewhere downhill on a slight grade for a long distance and easily yield 50+ mpg.

The 40 miles was mostly a level surface. I have taken plenty of trips of 350 miles where I averaged 31.5 MPG, but that was at 65 MPH.

I am sure if you set your cruise at 55 mph and drove across Nebraska on Interstate 80, you get could get 35 MPG on a Tank.

Tell me something I don't know!

I don't drive like that for a whole tank! My only point was to illustrate what you could get on a long Freeway Trip at 55 mph, in no traffic and babying the accelerator.

yeah a 1 mile trip home is the same as a 40 mile drive. very nice. feel better? I don't think he claimed to have solved the energy crisis. seemed like an observation.

The guy is just illustrating how we can get better mileage by driving with a little more sanity and base expectations. I'm sure the true average for someone who might drive in the typical 70 mph range will be 26 mpg. It's just that if you have a lead foot and drive constantly 70 mph on the highway, don't come back *****ing that the car gives bad fuel economy.

I have managed to get about 31 mpg average on a trip to newport and back with cruise at 68 ish or so....very soft foot....i have a gs300 though....that is about a 100 mile round trip with about 8-10 miles in the city. My city mpg is horrible though !!! Overall I get maybe 20 mpg in my 90% city driving....

Except the original poster with over 500 posts to date is very far from a "newbie", and should know better. You can get fantastic mileage on a 40 mile trip going mostly downhill regardless of how hard you drive the car. That's what makes his observation irrelevant.

Should know better

I was not driving downhill - It was a level surface.

We've had other posters say they got 31-32 at 68 mph - driving 55 can save as much as 20%. I still maintain. That if you went out to Nebraska on I80 and set your cruise to 55 mph - you would get 35 mpg on a tank of gas. Freeway exit to Freeway exit.

I think you should know better!
