Default Our 3GS fuel range is grossly conservative - math included

Did a little test, let's do some math:

Our GS has 18.8gal tank

Fuel light came on @ 368mi with fuel range 27mi left
Fuel car @ 390.3mi with fuel range 0
Total fuel pumped = 16.418 with 2.38gal left on the tank

MPG reading on car = 24.8
Actual Calculation = 23.77

Facts - Using Actual MPG
Could go another 56.57 miles with fuel range reads "0"
Fuel left when light first came on = 3.32gal / 78.87mi
50~55mi discrepancy with our fuel range reading

does give me extra peace of mind when I am dangerously low on gas

I saw a Dateline type fluff/filler story on this. US models have a large buffer across the board. They found like up to 80 miles from the needle hitting E was normal. 40 to 60 miles from digital readout saying "0 miles left" was normal.

You are off a bit as well

Total fuel pumped = 16.418 with 1.26gal left on the tank

i think you meant 2.26 gallons left

I think you might be a bit optimistic. You might have 2.26 gallons left, but I doubt the fuel pump will be able to pump with less than 1 gallon left. depends on where the pump is located in the tank.

Everyone's numbers will vary with driving style and especially octane level and altitudes. Are you guys in Phoenix running lower (1 point) octanes due to your elevation levels above 1k?

Most Lexus & Toyotas across the board has about a 3 gallon "safety" net once that low fuel level light comes on.

well yea obviously no one is daring enough to drive many miles when the range shows 0, so either way, these numbers just provide a simple reference for people that are curious, there was another thread about this, but i figured i'll post a new one

We run the same 91oct as CA as far as I can tell, and yes, the numbers definitely do vary from owners, I was very impressed that I could even get 24.8mpg on the v8 where I know some 350 owners don't even get.

and this just proves it that the safety net is around 3gal or roughly around 60+ miles. not bad...

GS460 is pretty good with gas granted you aren't flooring it all the time haha. I averaged about the same, 25mpg when I took it for a trip to the Bay Area. It's all in the driver's style. Some drive more agressively than others.

I was getting 30.5 on a recent trip from Gilroy to Napa along 101. And that's with 4 adults and a baby.

I drove it to 0 and +another 14 miles or so on my first tank of gas. the meter was showing 0.. good thing is I researched before taking that chance to drive to the gas station close to my work. Total gallons I've pumped was 16.xx which is still has like 2 gallons left.
