It's no myth synthetics can go twice and more mileage than dino oil.The choice is available for what ever people want to use..
It's up to the consumer if they want to pay $150 for an oil change. A smart consumer can just ask for the basic LOF and pay less than half of that.

I've been and will be corrected many times here and in life. You live and learn.
You posted 10K with BMW and I posted BMW is 15K.
Just shows how much better BMW thinks synthetic oil is.
Or on the other hand it just shows how cheap they are? They dont want to change the oil every 5k miles on their cars. Your synthetic oil lasts 15k miles? I dont doubt that, but does your OIL filter last 15k miles? I highly doubt it, so please correct me on this one too.. LMAO

With todays engines,a high quality oil filter and synthetic probably can go 15K miles.I wouldn't go that many miles on a because I'm too ****.I'll go 10-12K.
Amsoil claims 25K on one of their oil filters.
It's not a question of cheap on 5K changes.Synthetic oil is over twice as much as dino.
It's a question of convienence.

You just may be corrected.

Straight 30w was used in the 50-60's too.

Depending on model with a toyota filter at $7,probably $6-$10 more,I would guess.

1989Lexus,here is an interesting site that has discussions and good points on both synthetic and regular oil as well as oil filters.

It's a very interesting site on many things on vehicles.

Alright, this has become another dino vs synthetic thread. To the OP, I would like to add my thoughts....

Going to the dealer for services helps cement a relationship. I use the same service advisor each time and I simply ask for an oil change and provide my synthetic oil (i drive 7k miles a year so oil sits a while and lots of short trips). Doing that ends up costing me like 45 bucks in labor and 25-30 in oil or something like that. But what it does is that when there is some small issue , such as a plastic component with a bend or a cloth panel with a small bubble, he has gone the extra mile and replaced the part with no hassle. This may be the typical Lexus experience but I tend to think it is because he knows me and my 2 vehicles and knows I service there (even if it is a simple service). So you can even get a 15K service for 75 bucks, and in your service manual check off what you have done, basically it is a simple set of inspections, no significant fluid change. In fact all services are simple until 30K when you should do a brake flush. Tranny, differential, radiator fluids all go for a long time on the GS.
