Default 225/50-17 vs 225/45-17 on 3GS AWD?

Original one is 225/50-17, while some places recommend 225/45-17 as an alternative replacement. I thought that will decrease overall diameter. Will there be an issue going from 50 to 45?

That will cut the diameter of the wheel/tire by almost an inch. Use this website to easily convert P-metric tire sizes to inches in diameter. Which will totally screw with your speedometer...not to mention create more of a gap between the tire and wheel well.

That's what I thought; not sure what tirerack rep recommended it to me as an alternative.

If you go from a 225/50-17 to a 225/45-17 then your speedometer will be 3.7% slower and tire shops won't mount that size for you. The standard cut-off for acceptability is +/- 2%.
