Question Just picked up my '09! Question on extended warranty

Just picked up my '09 GS 350 starfire pearl / ivory yesterday! Very excited. I've been reading up this forum for ~2 years now, but this is my first post

I've got a question on extended warranty. Basically, is it worth it? They sold me the Penske (who owns the dealership) extended warranty (not the Lexus one) and claimed that it covers the same thing for less money (I paid $1889). My reasoning for buying it on the spot was (1) supposedly it'll cost more to buy right before the factory warranty expires (or so they claim), (2) it was fleet pricing 'cause I went through internet sales, and (3) if any one of the gizmos break, I'll probably recover the cost already. After I got home, I remembered that I wasn't planning on buying extended warranty 'cause I'd be buying coverage for a car I don't expect to break in a major way for a time range 4 years out and began to regret it.

Thoughts?

Otherwise, love the car

You can buy a real Lexus extended warranty from the internet for about the same price anytime before the bumper to bumper warranty expires. I always wait until my bumper to bumper warranty almost expires before I decide rather to get extended warranty. Why buy double coverage if you dont have to.

I dont think these warranties are worth it. Reliability is the reason why I bought a Lexus in the first place...I feel I am already paying a premium for the reliability in the purchase price.

I think many people even got the lexus oem extended warranty for about the same price, again, I doubt with lexus that you'll ever need to use it

please post pics of your 09, you are probably one of the first one to get one

Congratulations on getting a 2009 GS 350. You'll enjoy many miles with your Lexus. I'm usually one to pass on the extended warranty knowing Lexus makes reliable cars but you never know and it's good piece of mind knowing if anything breaks or is defective you can always have Lexus fix it. Please post some pictures of your new 2009 GS 350. Happy driving...

Waste of money honestly, the GS is a solid car with no major problems, very reliable. In my opinion extended warranties are enormous money makers for auto dealers, with markups running to 100 percent over what you could buy somewhere else with the same coverage. Furthermore, it will also depend on how long you are planning on keeping your car. For example I only plan on keeping my GS for 3-4 years max, therefore I wouldn't need the extended warranty. Also take into account on what the extended warranty actually covers and determine whether it is worth it.

Thanks for the responses. I've called up the dealer to demand a refund ('cause technically they lied to me about not being able to purchase the warranty after the initial purchase but before the warranty expires), and the finance manager will give me a call back. We'll see what happens ...

Will take some pictures soon ... it's beautiful today here in northern CA~

Smart choice If I recall correctly you should be able to get a full refund since you bought it so recently. But they'll probably try to talk you out of it and feed you another BS story

Sweet. A different manager called to apologize and will refund to my credit card supposedly today. I was expecting a fight, but it went through fine.

That's common reasoning, but reliability before the fact is statistical not determinative of some particular outcome in any given case. It can offer you some peace of mind but not actual immunity. Somebody has to be the statistic on the bad side.

how much more does the extended warranty cover?

up to 150k miles?

if that's the case, the car most likely won't break $2000 worth of stuff.

only transmission replacement makes the warranty worth it.
