Default Cleaning aftermarket air filter |==|

Anyone have experience cleaning an aftermarket engine air filter ? I put around 20,000 miles on my K&N drop in filter and I wanted to clean it... But before I do I just wanted some advice on cleaning it before I mess it up. Thanks

Cleaning it is easy...oiling it is where people mess up. I usually hold the can about 2 feet away and just spray in a sweeping motion. It's kind of like spray painting...you want a fine mist, not a blotch of paint in one area.

make sure it's 100% dry before putting it back, last thing you want is water / moisture into the throttle body. also, you need to grease it (come with the cleaning kit) before putting it back, make sure you use newspaper or so to soak out all the extra grease too before putting it back in. you don't want to suck those grease in as neither

So basically I clean it with water , let it dry, then re-oil it and remove any extra oil ? ... I assume I can get the cleaning kit at a local automotive store right ? Thanks for the info

Go get yourself a K&N filter cleaning kit. Basically you spray it with the cleaner they provide. Make sure to soak it good and let it stand for a bit. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose from the inside outward so that the water pushes the dirt/crap back out. Let it dry throughly and apply a light coat of K&N oil and re-install filter.

A mechanic told me to clean my K & N filter by putting it on the top rack of the dish washer. And that is what I did, it turn out pretty good.

By the time you buy all the cleaning kit and oiling kit, you are pretty close to the cost of a new filter. I use to run new K&N filter every 2 years, less work, no over oiling and no waiting overnight for the stupid thing to dry.

Don't use a spray nozzle to clean it. Just plain running water.

Dishwasher?? That is a bad idea...

Beat it against a wall to get a lot of that dirt out. then follow what everyone has stated. I've had various K&N filters in various cars, never an issue.
