Default Different tire size on rear for AWD

I'm thinking about putting 285/25's on my rear. My current tires are 255/35 on all 4 wheels. If I go with a 285 that is a 25 series tire, will this keep my diameter close enough to not cause issues with AWD?

255 * .35 = 89.25
285* .25 = 71.25

I would say that's definitely a negatory.

I'd go with 30 series if you want 285 width. That should be around 1.1% difference.

I would, but I'm not sure if that's going to fit. Will that size tire fit without any modifications?

Your current 255/35/20s fit. The 285/30/20 is is 0.3 inch smaller in diameter. I don't see why it wouldn't unless if you're concerned with the width?

Yes, I don't want the tire to stick out too drastically. 5mm or so would be fine, but nothing too crazy.

Going from 255 to 285 will give you a gain of 30mm total as far as width... Seriously?

I think it's too wide for your rims... Probably want 10 inch rims.

Yes, but seeing as the tires will run me over $300 a piece, doubtful I could justify that unless I needed new tires.

thats a pretty big tire for an 8.5" wide rim. I would say 265 max but you are better IMO to use a spacer if you are looking to fill in the void?

285/30 will rub like a motherf#$%r. Do either 275/30 or 285/25, but you will need to do something about that grossly fat front tire

^...OP is running 20x8.5 for his rim size. 255 is spec and 265 would/could work. I cant see a 285 or 275 tire on that rim. If he was running at 20x10 or wider then yes.

Yep that's what I would do too if you're just going to fill the void.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'm just going to go with 5mm spacers. I hope this won't cause any rubbing. We will have to wait and see. Anyone recommend a good site for ordering spacers? The shop that put my springs on has them, but that's a 3 hour drive away.
