You know, I should have been more specific. I don't mean the center console, or anything other than the main plastic dash panel. I like the gauges, the center stack and all that. My beef is with that big plastic thing.
There maaaay be some environmental issues but I don't think so. I think what it really comes down to is A) weight, and B) the almighty dollar. I'm going to check the difference between a couple of cars' dashes today to confirm, but the dash pads in the older cars were significantly more expensive than the dash panels in the newer ones.

I have both 98 and 06. I did not drive my 98 for three weeks and when I did, It was shoking to see how silly/small/outdated the dash on 98 looks like. Do the test for yourself and you will see.

I prefer the 3GS dash better overall, but I think that they should have kept the wood on the side of the center console which meets the dash from the 2GS. I also think they should have used something nicer than the AIWA boom box silver around the navigation screen. The biggest improvement over the 2GS dash IMO is the instrumentation gauges. I like the metallic light blue look much better than a TIMEX indiglo look.
jre002...absolutely agree about the instrument panel. I have yet to see a set of gauges that looks as good as the 3GS. This was a huge component of my purchase decision as I knew that this is what I would stare at 80% of the time (besides out the front window) when inside my car.

when I first got my 3GS I was very upset that Lexus doesnt put more wood in. I think their concern of reflections is a huge cop out. For a 50k car I want wood on the center of the dash, not just the lame *** console. I considered a wood dash kit, but kind of forgot about it. If you look at BMW's dash in the 3 and 5 series it dismal as well, and the interior plastics is slipping on the new bimmers

I know I risk getting flamed, but the BMW dash is at best "utilitarian". I expect so much more in a $50,000+ car.
In my opinion, the 5 Series exterior is that car's strength.
BTW, I have been really enjoying this GS now that it is steadily above 55-60 degrees...as the rattles have disappeared. I can finally relax and enjoy the ride!

I think a $50,000 car should look like a $50,000 car. My suspicions were confirmed about the pricing difference on plastic dashboards vs the vinyl-trimmed ones.
1999 Celica dash: $896.00
2000 Celica dash: $493.18 (after a supercession that yanked the price up $100)
1996 Corolla dash: $817.82
2003 Corolla dash: $390.14
Just examples, but that's apples to apples. I don't think there's a Lexus owner out there who would object to $1000 premium to make the trim levels and fit and finish unimpeachable.
That having been said I love the car, I just don't love that plastic crap on the tops of the doors and the dash. As soon as I have some extra cheese I'm throwing it at some upholstery rats to get it up to spec.

leather stitched dash would've been nice.
some people think LOTS of wood = luxury.
but wood is only meant to serve as accents. too much of it makes it look gimicky and tacky.
and you only put wood if the dashboard design accomodates it. they should be in slabs of at least 3"x6". not bits and pieces here and there
you've seen the fake wood pics before- with fake wood stickers stuck everywhere (around a/c vents, gauges, etc etc),
it looks grotesque and tasteless, with no class.
I bet some of you would like wood trimmed seats too eh?
maybe some of you would even like a lexus carved from a tree.
