Half Dome in middle of dashboard

What is that half dome at the front of the dashboard in the middle? what does it do?

I did some research and it's a solar sensor that controls the light and the AC. My question is how do I know it's working for the AC. Theoretically the GS's AC is suppose to compensate for the sun if it detects it.
