Question Traction in the rain...those with 10"+ wide rims

Those that have 10" wide rims or larger...I am 10.5"...I am wondering if the car doesnt like the wide tires in the rain or is it the tires I have. I think they are the Toyo Proxes 4 Tires. Seems the rear of the car comes out pretty easy not that I have any troubles and I am okay with it but just a bit surprised. I have never owned these tires and I had a 10" wide rim on the IS350 but with the PS2 tires and they where awesome. Best tire to date I have owned. I wanted to try something different.

Post back what you are experiencing or you have had these tires before.

Thank you

I have 10.5 rear with 275/30 ToyoT1R tires. I guess it's the tire coz before I have Nitto 555. It's really slippery when it rains but now with Toyo's no problem at all. TOYO T1R are the best tire out there based on my opinion.

i have had both on my tc 8.5" fwd. and my toyos spun way more than the ps2s, i very rarely even chirped the ps2s where the toyos seemed to break loose much more often. ps2s ftw, just a little on the pricey side and horrible for if you have camber.

Bridgestone Potenza RE050 A Pole Position, Best tires IMO, never spun a tire (unless I really tried) or hydroplaned in the rain, even at 80+ mph on the highway ... I'll ride on these all day and night in any weather

PS - I've got a 2nd Gen GS, don't know if that would matter though ...

Yea I think its the tire and the fact I am 295 in the rear. I still think the PS2 is the best tire to date and I never had any troubles in any weather with them.

I notice I can break the car pretty easy around turns in the rain. I dont drive much but was wondering if the larger tire in the rear was more the issue then the actual tire. I have heard nothing but good things about the tires I got but they do not compare to the PS2. I dont drive this car that way so for this car they are a decent tire.

I've got the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus on mine and the car does sometime break in the rain, I blame it on the massive amounts of tire shine run-off from the local car wash

haha good point Habeeb. I guess all the tire shine from my windows tinted when they hand washed my car after was probably the problem as it was the next day it rained and the first time I have had the car do it.

is there a water groove on the tread?

maybe it's so fat, it can't divert the water fast enough

Mike in regards to rain; the wider your tires, the higher your chances of hydroplaning. Not to scare you at all, its just there is more tire hitting the road and getting water under them. I have literally lost control and did a few 360s in my 2GS 400 with 275s in the back (Yokohomas but I found out my tread was very low in the inner sides) doing 80 on the highway (I am lucky to tell about it).

I've never had Toyos. Here is my rundown on tires with 265 or 275 rears
Kumho Escta- good wet traction
RIken Raptors-good wet traction
Yokohoma AVS 100-decent wet traction, below the two above it
Goodyear Eagle F1 DS-the best wet weather traction for a high performance tires (I swear these tires get BETTER in the rain, superb)
Dunlop (forgot)-no thanks, not very good

I was talking about the Michelin PS2 sorry....Those did great. I had 275/35 on the IS. I really think its that I am pushing 295 in the rear. Its the largest tire I have put on an aftermarket rim but I was afraid of the roads and wanted a little more protection from pot holes. Car is great in the dry weather and Habeeb may have hit on the head with the tire shine. I had the windows tinted the day prior and many they bathed my tires in that stuff and so that could have been it. Weather is also nicer out now so I can push the car a little more. Going to pay closer attn to it now that its nicer out and see how it does.

Thanks!

thx for the heads up! this is something that all of us with staggered fitment should keep in mind. i hydroplaned a few years ago on my old TL, scared the crap out of me. i was on stock oem wheels with falken ziex 512 tires, and was going 90-100 kph on the highway and the rain was pouring down like you were pouring water out of a bucket. visibility was down right limited. i hit a certain section and i could feel my car sliding. let go of the gas and fought the panic of stepping on the brakes, and tried to steer my way out. regained traction a few seconds later (seemed like minutes). after that, i was going well below the speed limit, with traffic zipping past me.

To mike (OP): see my sig for wheel/tire size. i haven't had any problems yet driving in the rain. but when i'm driving at city speed limits, i can't push it hard enough for the rear end to slide out (but then vdim and trac helps with that). having said that, i have felt the traction control system (trac) take over a few times when i make quick left hand turn at the light on dry pavement. i can imagine how much more slippery it would be if it was in the rain or if i turned trac off.
