A/C Smell
#46
This is probably a stupid question, but do dealers do work on makers they don't sell?
I see. So the difference between MiST and BG is that MiST kills the growth throughout the system, but BG actively removes it from the evaporator?
What they will do is remove the under panel of the passenger side of the dash. The MiST machine is placed on the floor under the dash. The chemical disinfectant is added to the machine and a fine ultrasonic mist is forced into the intake of the AC system under the dash on that side. It is sucked into the air box and circulated throughout. This continues for about 15 to 20 minutes. When done, the growth is dead and the odor is gone. Replacement of the cabin filter is recommended just to remove any residual mold, mildew and bacteria that may be trapped.....less chance or reinfecting the air box.

So I decided try to a few things myself before spending $150 for BG or $45 for MiST.
The other day I was shopping at Target, and I saw the Lysol Disinfectant Spray on sale. Since it was only $3, I decided to give it a shot.
I first removed the cabin air filter, then turned a/c temperature to "max" and air to the highest setting, then started spraying the three air in-takes near the wipers with the spray. I did roughly 5-8 seconds for each, let it run for a few seconds, then move on to the next one. I left all four doors open so the chemical wouldn't stay inside the cabin. I'm not sure how much I sprayed, but I spent about 20-25 mins on this. I also sprayed the cabin air filter directly, and put it back during the last 10 mins so it would dry out.
The next few days, I would turn on the a/c with temperature to "max" and drive with all four windows + moonroof slightly open. I could smell the spray for about a week.
I did a few medium-distance drives in the last few days with the a/c on. The smell is mostly gone (it was a fairly pleasant smell anyway, so I didn't mind too much), and so far the musty smell hasn't come back!
I'll keep observing and see if this is a viable low-cost solution.

I replaced the cabin filter and placed a "New Car" smell air fresher in with the filter. Took care of the smell. My car stays pretty clean, but as for the germs that I've read about I may get that mist thing done that's offered at some dealerships.
