Default lights setting on dash

in my 06 300 awd with 40k miles, i noticed that the light setting on my dash/instrument panel keeps switching from dim to brighter and vice versa. i began noticing this a few days ago. is there a reason for this? do i need to take it into service?

also, what is the difference between the "headlight on" setting and "auto" setting for the lights?

auto headlights means they come on automatically when it gets dark. headlights on is simply that, you just turn them on when you want them on.

the lights on your cluster could be from your headlights if you have it set on auto. also i believe the cluster is self dimming meaning if its very sunny or dark out, the cluster will adjust accordingly so you can see it. it should all be covered in the owners manual.

i had it set to headlight. and the lights kept switching on me although it didn't go from sunny to dark...was kind of overcast the whole time as it was raining lightly and my wipers were triggered throughout the drive.

Sounds like you have a problem with your light sensor.

perhaps...because i'd find it awfully annoying for the sensor to be so sensitive and switch back and forth without any major changes outside to the sunlight. hopefully it's just inside that the lights flicker off and on and not the outside headlights.

The sensor is pretty sensitive. This happens to me all the time, especially when I go under bridges. You mentioned it was overcast and it was raining so I would think that the sensor is hanging right around the threshold when it was happening for you. If it isn't happening during sunny days or after dark, I wouldn't conclude it is broken yet.
