Is it me or am I just used to a v8 engine of my 98 GS400? Of course, when sitting inside the car, you don't hear anything, but when outside (and the car is on) the v6 is just loud.

Has anyone thought the same or is it me thinking to much?

Yeah...they're known to be loud. It's the direct injection nature of the motor. What you're hearing are the injectors. Sounds like a diesel! Nothing to worry about. They all sound like this.

Louder, and increased tailpipe carbon build up(compared to non-DI engines).

yup, noticeably louder. actually from outside i think the new 460 engine is still louder than the old 400/430 engine setup.

just the nature of it. no biggie, i am inside the car

The gs's are really loud. Compared to my cousins 2010 accord v6. His is barely noticeable

I think it is also louder on the inside too (compared to the 430)....others seem to disagree...?

^^i concur, the 430s have a timing belt which adds to the extra smoothness/quietness compared to the 300/350's timing chain.

That's the nature of common rail diesel engines as the one in the GS350d

It is the direct injection+timing chain that causes the most noise IMO.

I think that was very first thing I noticed about my car when I first got it. I pulled into a drive thru bank window and I was freaking out at how it sounded. I couldnt believe that my G35 with 130k on it would idle quieter than my brand new 50k Lexus.


direct inject can yield 10-15% better mpg while adding 5-10% more power. The issue is that the system runs at an extremely high pressure so its going to make more noise

I think most of the concern is people just not wanting anything to be wrong with their engines. My bike has really ticky valves and almost everybody on that forum used to post "is something wrong it's so noisy!". Not that you can hear a damn thing when you're riding it but noises people aren't familiar with are just scary.
