GS placed 6th. They basically loved everything outside of how it feels as it had MANY MANY positives
-lowest weight
-best MPG
-2nd best acceleration (.1 seconds behind the 535)
-world class interior
-fantastic features
-great price

They just felt it needed some "hot sauce". How I WISH LEXUS would get their heads out their butts sometimes and SEND THE BEST CAR. Imagine if it was a F-sport equipped GS. I am positive it would have handled better and been more confidence inspiring.

I've seen this happen for a decade now...Lexus offers some sports parts but rarely EVER sends it to a mag for testing. Hell twice I've seen Lexus send an IS and GS with the rare 16" wheels.

Still, I think the positives really outweighed what we knew here.

I have yet to see a GS without the wood wheel here outside of the Passionate black and in Europe....yet they sent one.

haha pretty interesting indeed! i have to agree with mike, lexus could have packaged the car better. f sport becomes debatable, some people might argue they are "aftermarket"

gs350 has no apsss but at least i believe it has the avs option (please correct me), that might have helped?

I think their assessment is pretty accurate. I didn't buy it to carve backroads, I bought it to transport me around town or on long trips in great comfort, safety, and quiet. The fact that it's not a total pig in the twisties is a bonus.

I thought these two phrases are spot on:

As a rolling living room -- and a superbly crafted one at that -- the Lexus is tough to outclass.

This is a bookish car, not an athletic one.

The GS350 doesnt have the AVS option, but it rides pretty stiff as it is, it rides like a GS460 with AVS when on sport.
I think the GS450h would have done better here but its not within the price range. By the way, where can I buy a BMW 535 for under $55000, I sure would like to know. The last time I look, they were all over $60000, some as high as $70000. Maybe they found one with vinyl seats and halogen headlights

Yeah, I wonder how the tests would change if they would have used the 450H or the 460. A lot of those cars that "won" were approaching $60K. If a $60K car doesn't beat it's $50K competitor, than you're paying too much.

This comparison is almost as bad as the 350 vs the Hyundai Genesis V8 test. How the hell can you compare a V6 to a V8??

Nice to see the Lexus pretty much win the Noise/Comfort tests. Gawd...Audi did horrible in all of those tests...but they came in 2nd...

And where is the long term reliability test! I realize people generally don't think of these things especially in the 50-60k segment (they tend to replace cars every few years, be damned the cost), but for a lot of us this is one of the major selling points of the brand.

I didn't say that like it was a complaint, it was just a well known fact that "certain" magazine will only prefer the german counterparts

I am a german car fan at heart =)

Good article, thanks for posting it.

Since I don't get hung up on ranking (I do my own rankings), the article adds value for me.
