Default snow

did 6 hours in the snow today from Charlotte, NC to Roanoke, VA. VERY slow most of the way once in VA. The hills/mountains the last 30 miles were a mess.

Tip: Put it in N when going downhill on slick/snowy/icy surfaces. In D the idle overpowers the ABS and I found myself on the shoulder a few times before I started putting it in N. Once in N, the ABS and steering control was back and made it passable.

Saw a 5 series on the side of the road overheated from ice build up on the lower radiator and grille. GS never got warm and never missed a beat. Would have DEFINITELY preferred an AWD today, but this is a once in 5 years event for me to drive in.

Looks like a normal january day for us in Toronto.

AWD FTW, at least at this time of year.

Yeah, by the time I pulled off, I was the only RWD vehicle out there. Guy in an IS 250 AWD was next to me as I fueled up before hitting the hotel. He said he was having fun and laughed that I was out in it when many SUV's had parked and left their vehicles. I was white knuckled more than once, I'll admit. If I still lived in VA, I'd have bought something AWD. Living in GA, it doesn't make much sense. We have a Jeep Wrangler at the house that's normally our snow vehicle, but the thought of a 1000 mile drive in it was less appealing than taking the GS. I figured if I ended up in a ditch, at least I'd be comfortable and have a nice quiet place to sit while waiting to be pulled out.

We are expecting 10 - 12 inches of snow in NY. Tomorrow I will put my RWD with snow tires to a test should be fun.

Didn't get the chance to get my snow tires installed before this storm hits but I did my running around earlier so the car will sit for the whole weekend. Be safe guys if you have to go and drive in this stuff.

Wow! Crazy that at idle, it was overpowering?

We have been so lucky here in Socal. It's been in the high 70's and low 80's lately!

Great to see a snowy GS!

twylie, what tires do you have for winter? Did you try the snow mode (cuts down power + gear change programming different)?

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. I did try the snow mode which helps on starts, uphill and forward driving. It was the downhill sections that required me to take it out of gear.

I did have to turn off TRAC to allow me to spin the tires and get off the shoulder once I ended up off the road.

I got to use all kinds of buttons/toys on the trip so far!

Still snowing where I am and not expected to stop for another couple of hours.

Proper winter tires are really the only safe option on snow or ice. IMHO without winter tires it's too risky. They make a huge difference compared to all seasons.

Yeah, that's the only way to get going again, when it's really slippery.

Glad you made it there safely! Assume you were doing interstate (I77-I81) and not the back roads (221 down Bent Mountain).

Going to be doing that exact same drive next week so keeping an eye on the weather there.
