I got that for my portable GPS. This work with the suction, so instead of on your windshield you "suck it" on this. Works well and not illegal in any state YET. (The suction on windshield is illegal in some state like CA)
One thing concern me about this is during an accident. If someone rear you, this thing could fly strait into your passenger's face. But the chance of that happen is slim, everything in your car will fly when that happen.

^ I had Nuvi... hated it. I got it b/c I read so many good reviews and how many ppl love it, but compare to the Mio I was replacing ... Garmin was sux (except for the signal reception). The interface on Garmin was sux, but the worst was the search POI.

Could it be because there are so few POIs in "insanity" where you are located according to your profile?

Pole Position
[them] ----> [you]->[gps]->
If somebody hits you from behind, the force will cause the GPS to go forward, not backward assuming the mount has any friction on the dash at all. If you hit someone from behind, the same thing:
[you]->[gps]-> ---> [them]
The only case I can think of that will cause a GPS to fly in your face is if you do this:
[light pole] <----- [you really drunk going very fast in reverse]<-[gps]

A few ppl reported the issue and I didn't believe it until I saw my Garmin did the same thing. I stand right next to a Sears or BestBuy store and punch in the GPS search for that store.. takes it forever to spit back any result and the closest on the list was 20 miles away. My 5 years old Mio spit back the result instantly and correctly.
There were some other minor issue which I was willing to over look, but not the poi issue like this.
I guess my point was if you are accident prone than use the suction which will be illegal in some states, if not than use the stand and Amazon have the best price for it while the stores will charge you double.

We use a Garmin Nuvi 660 (newer Garmins now available at great prices) with the Garmin beanbag mount. Have had it for a couple years, great GPS, it's portable so you can move from vehicle to vehicle, or carry when hiking. Easy to hide it when you park, and we carry it when traveling for use in rental cars. Our 660 has a large screen and even with that, doesn't interfere with forward visibility. We have it sitting in the center flat area of the dash. Good set-up.

I've used a Garmin Nuvi 350 since 2007 and it's been okay for the most part. Everyone will have different preferences. For mounting, I also hated the idea of the suction cup and looked into various options. Didn't care for the beanbag, considered the vent mounts you can find on ebay and got one for temporary use or for rental cars, but ended up getting the proclip. Here's a similar one for the vent on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Arkon-GN047-Re...7220496&sr=8-1
Here are some pics of the proclip, but it is a little pricey (each piece is $30 and you need 2).
There is no permanent modification or drilling to your car. Just an alternative option.
Hope that helps.

Most of the navigation programs on the iPhone 3GS have all the maps prestored so it wouldn't matter if you lost signal. Apps like navigon can also search through google pois and and store it locally so it would still function in the rare cases you enter a cellular dead zone.
