Should I Paint My Roof Black ?
#16
As far as your decision on the vinyl, I think a higher grade that they use for "wraps" should have pretty good durability and longevity and shouldn't have any ill effects on your paint. Cheaper, sticker grade vinyl might.

Hey Miami,
I thought about doing this also for my car but in the end decided against it because I like the clean look of the roof. With that said I really like how it looks on the matador red color but like DunnoJack said the process is reversible. Paint it for $200, you might really like it and if you don't save up to get it painted back to original color.
good luck,
rg

I'd definitely go the vinyl route if you're not 100% sure if this is something you want permanently done, despite the cost.

Not quite as easily reversible. If you paint it black, it doesn't have to match anything. Having to paint it back to original color, you have to match the old paint on the adjacent panels. Not as easy to "butt match", especially with a tri stage pearl color like MIAMIGS3 has.

Because, ultimately it's your car, your money and your decision. Obviously you want to do it, but if all the responses came back saying "don't do it", would you still do it or not?
If you wouldn't do it based on the responses, then you're not doing it to please yourself and you only want approval of others.
If you would still do it despite the responses, then there's really no point of asking.
I say just leave it alone, but that's just my opinion.

With that in mind, I'll be seeing my way out of this thread before I get banned.

I say no way. Unless you get a proper glass panoramic roof, it will look cheap and fake.
It will also depreciate the value of the car. Used Lexus cars are bought by conservative older people, and the last thing they want is stuff like that. I've seen cars at the dealer sitting on the lot for months because of mods like this.

Painting the car is in itself a depreciation factor. So while reversible, it involves 3 expenses - painting it the first time, repainting it the second time, and the deprecitaiton.
And while I'm pretty sure there is no after-market panoramic roof option on this car, even if there were, it would compromise the rigidity of the car and cause flex. Anyone who drives an ES350 UL will have experienced this. Its the reason when we were buying our ES350 - there was no way I would buy it with the Panoramic roof.

I vote to leave it as is. I almost painted my roof and changed my mind. I also like how the roof flows on our cars so I opted to not paint mine.
If you do paint it you would need to lose the roof spoiler IMO so it flows nicely into the back window (blacked out).

It's not my style but I could appreciate a painted black roof with the right mods to match it. Like a black front lip and rear diffuser. Add some dark tint and the theme might rock pretty well.
As for which method I would go with painting....but I say that without any experience with the overlay stuff.
Eric was very straight forward with his comments but I do agree that too many people ask for opinions on stuff they already know the answer to. You already know if you want to do this. There are gonna be people who like it and some who don't. It's the modding theme that will determine whether most like it but we won't know until we see it.
Do your thing....don't be scurred.

I say no, but I got the mod bug out of me in the late 90's I'm just a old guy now but if you're young and want to do all that trendy stuff I say go for it. I remember doing all the mods to the Honda's in the late 80's. During that time it was coolest thing to be a part of and I have no regrets, but were talking about painting the roof on a GS. GL

Agreed. This one component alone should be enough for you to not paint the roof.
No disrespect to anyone who's already done it, I've seen it done on enough cars, lexus included. I've always thought two tone paints are tacky.
But, if you are going to do it, painting it would be the *only* way to do it.

I say go for it MIAMIGS3!! It's sure not going to depreciate your car any more than rolling and pulling the fenders, or even dropping it!! It's paint for God's sake.
