Have a wierd situation here on my 06 Lexus GS300 AWD where my wife and I noticed that sometimes while the car that has been parked in our garage either all day or overnight will automatically turn on something that makes a sound "sounds like either a fan or fuel pump running" for about 30 seconds then shut off all by itself while it hasd been idle for hours or all day?

Is there some sort of fan that kicks on by itself or something else that turns on for approx. 30 seconds and then shuts off??

Maybe it's Christine re-incarnated?? LOL

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I don't remember exactly but I think the owners manual mentions things like this specifically.

Let the car sit overnight. Open the hood before you start it. Stand by the engine bay and have someone else sit in the cabin and start the car. See if you can pinpoint the noise, general area, or fan that makes the noise.

Second question, is your AC system set to Auto? If so, turn off the Auto setting and see if it still does this. Maybe in the auto setting, it kicks in the secondary radiator fan automatically until the car ECU it is not needed at that time.

The other thought is that it could be the ABS system activating.

This was on an information card that i got with my car, it says " APPROXIMATELY FIVE HOURS AFTER THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF, YOU MAY HEAR AN ELECTRIC MOTOR SOUND COMING UNDER THE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT FOR SEVERAL MINUTES.
ITS NOT A MALFUNCTION.
IT IS THE SOUND OF A PUMP PERFORMING A FUEL EVAPORATION LEAKAGE CHECK."

my '06 430 does it after about 5 minutes and it's under the hood near the windshield on the driver's side. I thought it was something to do with the ABS on mine. It's made me jump more than once when I was in the garage with no other noise or music on.

Its common for the ABS system to perform self-checks, relieve pressure, or run the pump with the key off. It is normal, nothing to be worried about.

Thanks all for the great feedback.....was kinda freaked out a little when you hear noises coming on when engine is off especially with the new keyless igniton systems
