There is this odd sound coming from the engine bay when I'm in idle. I took it to the dealership and they said it was the drive belt tensioner. My car only has 54,600 miles.

1) How often does this part go out?
2) How much would it cost to replace?
3) I noticed the sound before my 50k warranty expired. Do you think I can still get the dealership to replace this part? They quoted $1200!!!! (*said 7 hours of labor) That sounds like a little BS.

7 hours for a belt tensioner? Shouldn't be much more work than just replacing the belt itself eh?

funny how they won't cover it under powertrain warranty which is 6/70k. belt tensioner should be part of the engine which is the powertrain

Technically no. I had a squeaky one on my Matrix in the past and Toyota would not do anything about it even under ECP. I think they wanted around $350 to replace it at Toyota. I scoffed and lived with it.
