Question Auto-headlights drained my battery =(

In my 2006 GS300 I have my stock headlights set on "auto" and for the headlights to immediately to shut off when the engine is turned off and when I open the door.

Last night when I went to the mall, I was not careful and did not notice that my headlights were still ON after I turned off the car, opened the door, and then closed it and locked it.

I came back from shopping 1 hour later and noticed that my lights were STILL on. When I got in the car, it would not start because the battery was drained.

Luckily I was able to get a hold of mall security and they came by and jumped my car. This happened a couple times before, but I manually turned off the headlights before it could drain the battery.

Has this happened to anyone else as well? Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks much appreciated,

-fuzz

Yeah, happens to me here and there. My headlight is set to auto, drive into the garage, turn off the car and close the doors and when I press lock on the fob, the light is still on,usually it turns of all the lights if I press it twice. I dont know why this happens either

Interesting...that happened to me once in my '93 SC300. The battery didn't die or anything, but it just had me scratching my head when I got back to my car.

It was just a one time thing tho.

Not sure if it's the case here, but I think the head-lights remain on if any of the doors or the trunk is not closed properly, at least that's the case in my '09.

I thought it was the doors or anything opened but that wasn't the case for me,I checked everything and didn't work. The only way was to sit back in the car, close the door, press the start button twice and then turn off and then leave the car and press lock twice. That's what I do when it happens to me.

There is a relay that is suppose to shut it off after a few seconds. But I would just manually shut it off just to be on the safe side.

It's the door switch, I'm betting that most of the time it's due to the door latch mechanism not being properly lubricated and getting sticky. Go to town on it with white lithium grease.

Highly doubt it's anything electronic if it works "most of the time". Electronics just tend to work always or never.

I totally agree with you! Had my battery drain on my Hummer cause the door switch didn't work. Which caused my radio unit to stay on over night.

if it was set to auto then why did they stay on. Did you have it turned all the way to the right position?? mystery

Even if the car is set to ON, the lights should go out the moment you open the door.

Depends on how it's set up by the dealer. On mine, headlights in auto mode stay on for 30 seconds after closing all doors and locking.

I'd actually prefer that it turned off when the door is opened and the engine is off, but I don't want to pay somebody some ridiculous amount just to plug it in to techstream and flip a few switches for 30 seconds.

Honestly I've never even tried to see what happens if I leave it in the "on" position.
