I just got 2006 GS 300 without ML and navigation......
Has anybody replaced stock head unit by aftermarket one?

There's no replacement and at this rate probably never will be for the GS.

I think at best you MAY be able to, if you can find the part for cheap enough in the future, swap the whole head unit in an 06 with one from later years provided you find one that is also non-ML and non-navigation if you just wanted to upgrade the menus.

Personally with the new vais unit coming out that offers iPod out I will be looking closely at that as it basically turns your car into an iPod and replaces the whole interface. As I don't even own an iPod and with vais' history of pretty high prices I am expecting the cost of entry on that to be too high to bother though.
