Got the torx wrench and started to turn it - immediately the "puddle light" light in the door started to flicker.
Took out the switch, put it back in and screwed it back, the light started to flicker, and then went solid...and now the light stayed on...LOOKS fixed to me!!
I think I was getting an intermittent contact; the contact on the back of the switch has to be in contact with the bare metal of the body, and apparently that wasn't happening, all the time.

BTW, called Lexus to see what a new switch would cost: $38.
