Tires tires tires
first i know this is a hot topic and lots of people have mixed reviews i have searched the forum and still haven't come up with a answer to my problem..... right now i have 245 40 18 FALKEN FK452 on my car and my GS430 sounds like a damn 4x4 with the road noise.... i don't trust some of the review sites because 1010tires gives the FK452 a good rating for being quiet and these tires are HORRIBLE!!!! I want a good QUIET tire thats not going to break the bank please help me out guys....

Actually the Michelins do become a noisier after about 5k miles. If you want quiet, I would suggest Bridgestone Turanza Serenity, Continental ExtremeContact DWS or Bridgestone RE960AS.
There are forum members who have had good experience with all three of these specifically relating to noise. They offer decent performance too. Continental Extreme DWS seems to be forum favorite when it comes to value, quietness and performance.

I disagree somewhat. I've had the Conti DWS for about eight months now. There is definitely a noticeable tire noise that is higher than my previous tires (Dunlop run-flat crap). I would not call them loud, but I would also not call them "super quiet" by any means.
Like another poster suggested, if you just want a very quiet tire, buy the Serenity, but expect to sacrifice performance for the quiet. You CANNOT have both. You just have to decide what matters to you the most.

The Contis are a max performance tire and are bound to be louder than the Serenity which is a Grand Touring tire. The Serenity is pretty much the quietest tire you can buy. But it is also quite expensive, and while it handles well, it is not a performance tire.

Anyone have an opinion on whether or not I can go with a taller sidewall? Right now I've got:
P225/50VR17
Here are the other sizes available on Tire Rack in the 17" size:
225/55R17 97V $155.00 (ea.)
235/45R17 94W $230.00 (ea.)
235/50R17 96V $151.00 (ea.)
235/55R17 99H $131.00 (ea.)
245/45R17 99V $189.00 (ea.)
245/45R17 95W $231.00 (ea.)
245/50R17 99V $176.00 (ea.)
255/45R17 98V $192.00 (ea.)
Anyone know what is the tallest sidewall I can get that will fit my 300 GS AWD?
Thanks very much.

As the only person with Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum (KU27) 18's on the non-winter wheels, there isn't much to back me up but I find them nice and quiet. Granted, the amount we use this car, the fact that they are only going to be on maybe 8 months of the year, and the fact that they have a crazy high treadwear rating of 600 it's going to take quite a while before any mileage adds up to the point of saying that the noise won't get worse.
Did I mention they were pretty cheap?

Let me throw this out there... what kind of roads are you driving on? *I* think most major brand tires give off near equal road noise. The differences are the kind of roads you're on.

I replaced 245 45 18 FALKEN FK452 on my LS the day after I bought it
Bought Hancook 727s. This tire was so smooth and quiet it shocked me. I bought them in 225 55 18 for more sidewall and comfort but kept the tires for only 2 weeks because the LS floated all over the road ..... but it was so smooth and quiet, I wish I got them in the correct size.
Michelin tires are overpriced in Toronto. I bought Conti ExtremeContact DWS in the proper size BECAUSE Michellin Pilot Sport A/S would have cost $ 400 more, and what for ?

LOL if that's the case, Las Vegas and Arizona freeways are amongst the loudest to drive on. There hasn't been a single tire on any of my vehicle that were quiet on those freeways.
