Default Is the Leather Coated or Uncoated

Just bought a GS350 and wondering if the Leather in the car is Coated or Uncoated and how much of the seat is actually leather vs leather looking vinyl.

Lexus doesn't have fake leather in the GS so if it looks like leather it is leather.

I posted incorrectly so am correcting. The GS350 leather is a pigmented leather. This means the leather is dyed and has surface pigment and topcoat.

The GS460 is semi-aniline leather which means the leather is dyed, but does not have a pigment coat, but does have a thin clear protective surface dye.

according to the lexus website, all 2011 GS models now have standard semi aniline leather.

you can tell which one you have by feeling it.

I have Semi-Aniline leather in my ES Ultra, I really can't tell the difference between the two leathers.

Many people said the Semi-Aniline leather has a velvet like feel, not true.

The only difference is one has a "leather clearcoat" and one doesn't. If anything I would have thought that the coated one would feel a bit stiffer but probably wear better.

That's half right. The regular one is painted. It has a surface layer of pigment, and also a clearcoat. The semi-aniline one has just a clearcoat. So they both have a coating but one is more of a coating than the other.

But your conclusion is right, the regular leather is stiffer and wears better than the semi-aniline.

There is one area of my car I wish did not have semi-aniline. The arm-rest.

surprised you can't tell the difference, between my ls460l (semi-aniline) and gs350 (normal) the difference was night and day. semi-aniline is far smoother and way softer

I have the same observation comparing the semi-aniline in my GS460 vs. the normal leather in my parents ES350. A night and day difference in feel.

If it's true that all 2011 now have the semi-aniline...that's definitely why the leather feels "better" than my 2008 with "regular" leather.
