So what part is required to update my gen 4 navi? Is it the entire center unit or what is in the glovebox? I was thinking of finding a salvaged GS and getting the parts and just sell mine on eBay. Also with gen 5 is the dvd still in the glove box? I know on my IS350 it was part of the unit so I want to make sure they are the same parts just updated.

i cant remember for the life of me who did this but someone recently just bought a whole new gen 5 system. he was suppose to post up some further info but i havent seen it. from what i gather you need the whole thing (navi unit, wire harness and navi ecu).

yes, gen5 still have dvd in the glove box. 2010 is the year (gen6) they switched to hdd

So the swap is possible? That is the one thing I HATE about my 2006 GS...the NAVI looks like a 5-year old drew the graphics for it. It's so inferior in quality to the newer NAVI Generations...

i am pretty sure it's doable, just a matter of $$. another thing i wonder is all the harnesses, i don't know if all of them are the same

Its not the navi I want its the display for my iPod. I use my iPod a lot now and hate that I cant see the folders on the navi screen I hate how the gen4 is and since I came from gen5 I miss that portion. The rest I really don't use so it works just fine for me.

^ nice find! I need to find out what if anything is different. I'm hoping its all PNP and I can confirm what is needed.

Not too sure if its pnp but it shouldn't be an issue to compare both units from behind with wiring diagrams. If these units are coming out of totaled vehicles, i wonder if they would send the factory harnesses also. I was told by the dealer that they run different protocols, but not sure if that would really matter if swapping getting the entire assembly.

I'll also be interested in how this upgrade plays out. I came from the BMW 5-Series world and this sort of thing is outlined in great detail (the cost and the parts and the procedure). Once you have all the information then one can make an educated decision on whether it is worth it or not. There are other upgrades I'm considering but I'm having problems finding enough detail on how or if these are possible.

i know its pnp because my lexus tech told me that he swapped in a gen 5 into an 06 GS after the customer punched his navi screen. he didnt say if he changed anything else out or not.

Ill send Darrel an email today and see what is actually required. It would make more sense to me if it was the software or the brains to the unit rather then all pieces. The new navi screen may be slightly nicer but I on such a small screen no one would see the difference. Something tells me this is one part somewhere that needs to be updated.

Be sure and keep us all informed... It sounds like several members here are very interested in pursuing such an upgrade (assuming it's not tooo high a price).
