I will never understand why people care so much about prior questions being asked again, and slamming people for it. Especially new members. If you want to grow the audience here, (in what is a dwindling world of 'walled garden stand alone communities' now that Facebook has a billion people in it) it is not a good practice to make them feel unwelcome. Asking questions and having them answered is at the core of community interaction.

Imagine you were a new member to the forums, you have a burning question
about your Lexus, and you are confronted with a wall of threads that seem unrelated to what you care about. You search, and are confronted with yet another wall of threads that may or may not be relevant. Maybe the forum admins could create a 'New Members' section, where we could go in and ask our dumb-*** questions that have apparently been answered 100 times over the prior 5 years. Not everyone here has had a lexus for years, and not everyone has been on the boards for years.
Yes we have that kind of thread https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...ere-first.html Its called Frequently asked questions and DIY thread please look here FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its a sticky on top of 3gs forums thread lists.

I'm beating a dead horse here, and we're never going to agree, but you need to put yourself in my place. Assume you just found this board, because you were searching Google for an answer to your vexxing moonroof problem. Assume you did click on the CLICK HERE FIRST thread. (even though on the 3rd gen landing page it's something like 15th in terms of visual hierarchy and often telling people to click here first makes them want to do the exact opposite).

So you go to that page, vexxing moonroof problem in mind, and here are the main categories you see:

What are the differences between the 3GS Models?
Aftermarket Wheel Owners Thread
OEM Tips, Tricks, and DIY's (Do It Yourself)
Offical F-Sport Parts
How Low Can You Go - RWD
How Low Can You Go - AWD
Body Kits
Modifying Your 3GS With Aftermarket Products
Performance Parts

Ok, so finally buried down about 15th in the DIY I see "reset moonroof".
And there is indeed a solution there, but, I have already tried that solution, and it did not normalize my moon roof.

So there's another link, with yet another thread, and the answer is not in there either. Or even if it is, you'd have to read through 40 or 50 posts of chatter back and forth of people being confused and not finding the right answer.

Bottom line: it people are naturally going to take the path of least resistance. They are faced with 2 choices coming here: read through a lot of posts, that appear to be telling them to do what they already know has not worked, or they could just post a new thread with the specific question, ALSO stating and hey by the way, the fix that is posted did not work for me, anyone know anything else?

Guess what most people are going to do, excluding the long time posters who apparently have every post memorized.

jesus christ, find a shop vac and remove the sand from your vag.

its pretty obvious that if your looking for answer that you would go to the faq first to see if its in there. a simple search turns up many answers. most people are too lazy to do either and want info spoon fed to them. i have no problems helping others but when the same question pops up nearly every week it does get old.

one thing you also have to realize is that some times the first attempt to reinitialize the moon roof doesnt always work and it may take 3-4 times to cycle through to get it to work. that is directly word of mouth from my lexus tech.

to me it seems like you found your answer and it didnt work the first time so instead of trying again you go on a ranting fit and bashing the forum for not having everything right in front of you instead of trying to look for it.

No, that is not the case at all. I jumped into this forum originally because it was titled "After battery disconnect, settings won't respond". I said to myself, aha, that is related to the problem I am having. I stated my problem with the moon roof, and the OP was kind enough to say, try this. I was all set, no worries.

Then, BinaryJay came into this thread, of his own accord, to tell me "that answer has been posted dozens of times", and then someone else tells me to 'use the search' etc. That's when I feel compelled to point out that the current search function, like nearly all old search functions on these stand alone walled-garden community boards, really doesn't work all that well. It's frustrating to use, etc.

.
I did this at least 8 or 10 times, still didn't work. I haven't tried the other solution yet, that the OP of this thread was kind enough to repost.

understandable but the search function on this site is actually better than the ones ive used. keep in mind you have to be very general when you use it and it does take time because of how general you have to be.

Sheesh, it works for us. If you don't like it, you are free to move your complaining out of our "walled garden". The "read this first" thread stickied to the top of the forum is there to make it even easier to find this kind of "asked a dozen times" information. Is it truly that hard?

I'm sorry that you felt so offended that I told you that this has been asked and answered before. It's the truth. It's in the search results if you have a bit of patience and savvy, and it's in the "read this first" thread negating any need to use the search at all.

If you don't like the search function built into the board, and you think you can do a better job with google - then go ahead and use google to search this domain. There's nothing stopping you from doing that, google indexes the board just like every other site out there.

The fact that you're STILL arguing with everybody on here about this just doesn't make any sense. Just admit that you could have found this information yourself and move on. The search function isn't going to get any better at reading your mind in the near future and somebody is going to continue to point out every time you ask a previously commonly answered question. That's just the way it is in just about every forum, and worse in most.

Now in the words of rominl. "Okay everybody, let's get back on topic and be nice."

I will admit that I don't like the forum search function as I don't seem to get the hits I'm looking for.

For the people who don't know about this, it's very easy to use Google to search CL, or any other website for that matter (as mentioned by BinaryJay).

You just have to type your search query followed by "site:<domain>" (no quotes).

For example, you could do this search: Moonroof won't close properly with battery disconnect site:clublexus.com. The first hit with this query is this very thread.

It can be a bit tiresome to the veterans to have to answer the same questions over and over again, but at the same time, sometimes it's nice to see an issue brought up that hasn't been discussed in a while. Keeps the information fresh for others just perusing the forums and not actively looking for the solution to the problem (like myself).

yes, that's all I'm saying. Sorry for getting everyone so torqued up. Forum communities tend to be filled with people who have very strong opinions, and when those opinions clash it's like an ultra high compression direct injection Lexus 4.6 V8 full of Sunoco Ultra getting full-throttle acceleration. Sort of.
