water pump and timing belt question
i have an 06 gs430 with 50,000 miles on it
i took my car in for servicing today and got a call from my service advisor
he said the cars all done, but the tech noticed that there was slight crusting on my water pump indicating a leak, as well as since its been 6 years they recommend changing the timing belt
he said it should be fine as is for the next little bit... and it should cost about 1130 + tax... do you think i can get this done for a little cheaper somewhere?

did mine at 100K. My mechanic didn't say anything about "crusting". He did say my brake is a bit low but I ride for a few more oil change.
same model and year as yours.

Isn't water pump covered under powertrain warranty?
Powertrain Warranty
The Powertrain Warranty is for 72 months or 70,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Except for the situations listed on the Basic Warranty page, this warranty covers repairs needed to fix defects in materials or workmanship of any component listed below:
Engine
Cylinder block and head and all internal parts, timing belt and cover, flywheel, oil pan, water pump, fuel pump, engine mounts, engine control computer, seals and gaskets
Transmission and Transaxle
Case and all internal parts, torque converter, clutch cover, mounts, engine control computer, seals and gaskets
Rear-Wheel Drive System
Differential carrier assembly, driveshaft, axle carrier, axle case, axle bearing, axle shaft, seals and gaskets
See your Lexus dealer for complete details on the Lexus Powertrain Warranty.

Water pump should be covered under warranty, however, if you have over 50,000, then it is not. Water pumps can leak at any time. I have seen new cars come off the delivery trucks to dealers with leaks, so miles is not necessarily a judge. However, one would expect them to last for a long time. If you are over 50,000 miles and do not have an extended warranty, then check out Toyota service centers, as stated above.

if that truely is the case and the water pump would have been covered in the the power train warranty, i would speak to the dealership to see if the can cover it under "good will". i had a repair done to my car under "good will". if your dealer refuses, you can try contacting lexus corporate. i have never done that, but i heard it does work, the fact it was less than a month after the warranty expired should help your case. certainly worth trying imo
