stealership rant (trade in value for our GS)
#16
Just so you know I just pulled values in your area and your GS:
Average trade is 19,050-22,700
According to the numbers I see it looks like its going to take a dive by month end and average is going to be 16,300-18,300.
These are the actual numbers here no hidden secrets. The used car market is going to take a nose dive in the next few months now that Honda, Lexus, Toyota, ect are starting to see shippments of new cars. Dealers wont have to pay over book to get used cars now that they will see them again on trade-in.
If your looking to get a new car now is the time, you will get more for your used car and pay the same for the new car! If you plan to buy used I would let the market settle before making a move.

^ read my post again, the answer is there
And trade in value is not the same as a retail "asking price"...Asking doesnt meant that you have to pay that Remember that a dealer has to back up that car and put money into most used cars. I would say on average 2k of work goes into most cars. More if its CPO due to strict requirements. Then from there this thing called profit to keep the dealer open and pay its employees plays into role.
If a car comes in that doesnt need work and the owner has truly taken care of the car then it will be worth more on trade so at the end of the day your at the same point. If I dont offer more for that pristine car then my comp will and I lose out on business. This isnt very common around my area but there are the few.

I have purchased few used cars and after working the auctions I think I will never buy used again. Lease or buy new is the way to go IMO. Good thing with the new stuff is we have a lot of information to educate us as buyers today. With a used car not so much other then to see what is listed in the area at other dealers but you have no clue what your getting or how much they really have in that car.

When I sold my Camry, I looked up Kelly Blue book.. trade in value was like $11k, private was I think $13k, Carmax offer was $14k. Some idiot online asking for $12k. Sadly I bought the car for $35k. Carmax won the bid, 2 days later they put up my car for $18k and it was gone the next day.

I know the value can vary by zip code. Bottom line, their used prices were very high probably as some one said, due to the crises in Japan with new cars and parts availability. That said, I'll bet I could have squeezed a few grand more out of them but, it does not matter as I made the right decision in keeping my car. It looks super clean and was a CPO. They did a great job on the reconditioning and as long as I maintain it, it should continue to look and drive great. It is garaged at home all night long and I have indoor parking at work. I'm hoping not to let myself get the car bug when I have such a nice car.

used autotrader, Craigslist, and eBay. eBay gives free listing if you listing locally and free car report. their car report is like carfax. but gives out ratings 1-100 depends on car history. (my was 94).
my buyer found me on eBay. he was 70 year old IT company owner ( i googled him ). probably got more money if i negotiated better but whatever its done.

Did eBay charge fees or was it sold off their site?

Only thing that would ever scare me about a private party sale is the the buyer coming back with BS lemon law claims, trying to get out of the purchase, and making your life miserable. A headache you would not deal with going thru a dealer. The trade-off to this risk, of course, is a way better price.
