RWD driving in snow

I would consider what others have said, get a beater and drive that for the winter. I had a 2004 GS 430 and was driving around 40MPH and hit black Ice and crashed between two trees, all I broke was a mirror and damaged the window molding, but it was enough for me to get a beater for winter and drive that instead of my GS. It snowed about two inches when I had my second GS which was a 3rd Gen, it was slipping everywhere, never felt safe driving it in snow. Every GS that I have owned has been RWD because I think its the best thing to drive, but I dont think winter tires really help that much they help somewhat but overall its a RWD car so don't expect miracles.

it's no big deal... about 2 days after my GS could do 100mph on the road. Than I drive around to see all the HOV & SUV that get stuck in the ditch.

Thanks for all the replies! I did a little digging around on Youtube and found some great videos that compare summer tires, all-season tires, and winter tires. Pretty impressive actually! Here's a link to one in case any of you are interested in seeing them side by side.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions one can offer. I drive an 07 GS350 RWD. This will be my first winter experience with this vehicle and thought I'd try to get some ideas from others regarding what to potentially expect, or suggestions on how to maximize the safety of myself and others. Buying a new car is out of the question--that would be like abandoning a child, so please don't offer that as legitimate advice as I won't take it seriously. Anyone use winter tires? Sandbags? Bumper car style bumpers? <---that'd look sexy eh? Any thoughts, suggestions, or stories would be greatly appreciated!

i live in san francisco, so i got sumer tires. snow isnt much of a concern, but my problem is if i ever want to go to lake tahoe for skiing, what should i expect? that video on youtube comparing tires on ice is a bit scary, but why would i ever be in ice with bare wheels anyways? will snow chains be enough?
my friend tells me its risky to drive in the rain or snow with the summer tires, and i should swap for winter or all season tires. should i? how much would i be looking at if i do?

^ should pick the type of tires base on your 80% weather that you get/drives. The rest, just have to be extra careful and keep that cell phone fully charge just in case.

I'm in NYC and I have RWD model that I bought 3 years ago. I have 2 sets of wheels & tires. Usually when the temp goes below 50' I take off my summer set and put on my Blizzaks. I've never had any problems at all during the past 3 winters. We had a major blizzard last year, and I had to drive somewhere during the storm. The roads were a mess, but my car with winter tires did fine, it just kept going. I've seen lots of cars abandoned in the middle of the road. Just get good set of winter tires and you'll be fine.
