My favourite thing in the winter is parking on the street on top of hard packed uneven icy snowbanks that other cars avoid because they would get stuck... makes finding parking a bit easier in the city hehe.

If someone were to crash into me in the winter and I saw they had summer tires on I would go ballistic.

By the way, tire chains/tire studs are illegal here and I would suspect they would be equally so in California. They're illegal because they really chew up the roads and end up costing everybody tons of money in road repairs.
Oddly enough tire chains are often REQUIRED in the mountain areas of Southern California (not sure about studded tires, doubt they would even notice). If you have front or rear wheel drive they will require you to chain up. If you have AWD or 4WD you can usually show that you have the chains just in case and drive thru the chain stop. On rare occasions they will require everyone, even AWD and 4WD to chain up. If that happens to you and you don't absolutely have to get somewhere, I recommend you turn around. It means very icy roads and there are a LOT of cars spun out and blocking the roads. I live in the Lake Arrowhead area since 1998 and have seen lifted 4wd Jeeps and Trucks with knobby tires slide sideways while stopped for traffic on a banked curve.
