Mark Levinson sub rattle?? could it be blown???
Hello all,
I just purchased an '08 350 w/ ML. Ive noticed that at high volumes on songs with significant bass (hip hop) a rattling/distorted noise comes from the sub. But at lower volumes it hits perfectly fine. Is this normal??? Is my sub blown?? I have the lexus extended warranty. Thanks!! Any info would be appreciated!

Consider the source of the song. If it was an mp3 or from your ipod/iphone ( AAC format) then my bet is on the source. Try using a CD. if it happens there, i'll have the sub woofer checked.

SOLUTION - All of you have this wrong!!!
I had the same thing happen to my Mark Levinson 6x9 speaking in the front doors. The foam around the speakers comes unglued and cracks, etc. Therefore, you hear a booming sound during heavy bass parts of the songs because that paper-thin foam is flapping around
Fear not.......no need to buy new speakers. Instead spend $25 for a kit and replace the foam around the speaker. It is really easy!!!
I bought the kit from SIMPLY SPEAKERS - (727) 571-1245. They have the exact fit for your speakers. My purchase order says: LEXUS, MARK LEVINSON 6"X9" FOAM ATUO SPEAKER REPAIR KIT FSK-6X9.
It took all of 10-minutes to remove the door panel and about 45-minutes to repair. SIMPLY SPEAKERS will send you directions on how to repair. However, there are also many YouTube videos online, including one from their company.

With good quality songs I do not get rattling from the sub with loud sounds (hip-hop). I can (and have) turned it up pretty loud (50+ with no distortion).
I do have the front speakers rattling with some heavy bass songs. Kanye West - "Amazing" and also especially "Love Lockdown" sets it off really bad... I need to look into it to see if its this foam problem...

I have to agree, As I have the ML and I have been to the dealer numerous times for this, but I will say just out GS's or the 3GS as I had the 2GS with ML and that thing was like having a aftermarket sub installed. I really dont think the foam will help, I recall a tech telling me the reason the rattles occur is becuase the way the sub sits in the rear. Its meant to play Classical music or Pop not Hip/Hop and R&B.
