Default Has anyone removed the third brake light entirely???

So here is my dilemma, I owned an '07 350 before and had a sub in the trunk. The rattle from the third brake light was soooo annoying, made my car sound so ghetto. Well i totaled that car and now own an 08 350 and plan on putting in the same sub.

The audio install shop said that they can take out my third brake light entirely. Now I know this is illegal, but has anyone ever tried this and how are the results? Is the structure of the brake light where I can remove it and put it back if I needed to someday?? I don't think the cops would ever mess with me for it (cross my fingers). But the rattle is something I cannot bear.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried putting some sort of cushioning material between the third brake light and the glass? This way your still safe and theres no rattle.

It's been done by CAK500 and it looks pretty good.

d100patel - Actually the rattle is not because of the light vibrating from the glass. It's actually the housing rattling against itself as it is a multi-piece housing apparently.

msgs350 - Thanks and yes ive actually seen that, but it seemed he just sheared the housing from the columns so he can never go back to putting the brake light there if he wanted to. And also I am interested in moving it entirely and not repositioning it.

It is not necessarily illegal. In Oregon the traffic code requires to have at least 2 brake lights. CA may be similar.
