Default 2008 GS valve spring recall

Anyone had this done at their Lexus dealership? It was a recall issue......under warranty.

I heard its a $5K - $6K repair that is billed to Lexus headquarters.

Just curious if anyone has had this done and their experience?

Yes a lot of us have had this done, I personally had it done with no difference to be felt. It was more of a precaution then to actually make a difference in a car. Don't worry bring it in to lexus and have them do it.

I finally had mine completed last year and had no issues and car as is good as new. My only advice would be to buy some plugs and have them replace them while they are in there because they have to remove them to do the job. My Lexus dealer wanted $275 to replace the plugs, and that was just for the parts. I think that you can get the plugs for about $15 each.

If Iridium plugs are on the US cars as standard, then no need to waste money if you're not near the 60K mark.

I had mine done about 6 months ago with no problems. If anything, the work helped reduce the valve ticking sound.

For our used 2008 GS460 (we are 2nd owners), the notice came up when I had a new key programmed and cut. So the appointment is 13 Jan 2014. The dealer asked if they could keep the car for three calendar days. Does this sound normal to fellow 2008 GS460 owners? The explanation was: they need time to order the correct parts. That makes a bit of sense if they have to do a "first diagnosis" after taking in the vehicle, and the required work isn't quite what they anticipated. But I am wondering. Anyone else out there have a multi-day experience to get this work done? RSVP / LexLeexard

One of the cars I'm looking at buying (2008 GS 460 Canadian car) had it done on 2011-01-12 according to the service records. It had 48,000km on it at the time (approx. 30,000 miles).

***Update - Just found one of the recalls :

Transport Canada Recall Number: 2010221; Units affected: 3,702 (includes other models)

2007-2008: On certain vehicles, the material composition of the engine valve springs may include micro-foreign objects, which may compromise the strength of the valve spring, causing the spring to degrade and break. If a valve springs breaks, abnormal noise and rough engine performance will be noticed and, in the worst case, the engine could fail and stop suddenly while the vehicle is in motion. A sudden engine failure would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic, road conditions, and driver’s reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will install new valve springs.

Dear all: here is an update on getting the valve springs replaced on our 2008 GS460 at about 70,000 KM (about 43,750 miles): all work was done under recall warranty as scheduled at Lexus of Calgary in January 2014, totally as planned. There have been no problems observed after this warranty work. Apparently there was a slight delay in getting "parts" delivered to the dealership, but this did not impact the time for return of the vehicle. I must make the positive observation that I was very pleased with the condition of the vehicle when it was returned (detailed nicely), as well as the dealer's efforts to make sure drop-offs and pickups with the courtesy shuttle were flawless. Which they were -- and believe me, they were not simple. Anyway, I was actually impressed with the relatively high level of customer service -- especially seeing as I did NOT purchase the vehicle through Lexus, but through a used car dealer in Calgary with no affiliation to Lexus whatsoever. BTW, I had confirmed through Lexus Canada (out of Toronto, the home base of Rob Ford [for whatever that comment might be worth!]) that the Calgary warranty work was covered from every perspective. I was also positively impressed with how Lexus Canada handled my query, and the thoroughness of their "data management" regarding my used GS460. I am thinking that, so far, both the local dealership and the Canadian support / coordination are 100%. Wow. Unheard of. Congratulations to Lexus. Cheers / happy camper here / LexLeezard
