I have an '06 GS300 AWD. It's got no Nav and if i'm to be correct, no Mark Levinson radio. It simply says Lexus Premium Sound. I cannot stand how pathetic this radio is. When i drive my GS400 back to back, playing the same songs, its a night and day difference. I've even thought of swapping the radio from my old car to this one.
I know that there is less sound deadening in this car so maybe that's why the radio is weaker, but i can't stand it really. Let's not even get into the lack of iPod integration.
I'm curious as to what people here have done to overcome this. Complete new aftermarket system I'm not crazy about having a boombox in my trunk. I just want a next-gen feeling, powerful *** stock radio - like in my 1999 car. Will swapping a Mark Levinson system solve the trick? Can that only be done if you have Navi?

"pathetic" is the correct word for the non-Mark Levison stereo (I think it's about 130 watts of low quality music).
Swapping a ML stereo won't do the trig itself, amp, speakers, etc are all part of the elements.

Thanks guys. I figured this was the case. The radio itself couldnt make such a big difference if i'm using the same speakers. On the GS400, at not even half the volume the music is almost too loud. With this, the volume can be at 40 and it never fills up the cockpit. Going to go aftermarket with the speakers perhaps.

I have to agree the ML in my 450h is amazingly good. Considerably better than any Bose, Bang & Olufsen, or Harman Kardon that I have heard in a car recently... Could it be that at the light the car is whisper quiet?
The Bose system in my last Cadillac... Blew... literally blew out one of the speakers in the drivers door.

Swapping to ML consist of not just the radio and nav unit. Its the extra speakers and an amp that they have in the back of the trunk. But it sound so much cleaner with ML vs non.
