Default Help: Intermittent Humming Sound

Hi All,

I searched but couldn't find an answer to my problem so I am hoping you all can help a sister out - In the past week, when driving to work, I will hear an intermittant hum coming from my car. I first thought it was because I was passing folks with loud mufflers, but then I heard it start up when there was no one around (and everyone couldn't have a loud muffler anyway, could they?). Any idea what this could be? I thought perhaps maybe it was coming from a tire but then it would happen throughout the ride and not intermittantly....

Any ideas?

do you hear it when the car is stopped? if you dont i would lean towards a bad wheel hub/wheel bearing.

Only thing I can think of, if it's intermittent and happens once in a full moon, unless it happens when you're at a certain speed..... is you're hitting a patch of road that makes your tires humm.... my crappy dunlops (i've still yet to change because tires are fair and haven't worn much for 45k miles) do that when i hit a certain patch of road. What tires are you driving on?

or it could be the tires themselves. i know a lot of people have complained about the noise the run-flats make

^^^ This. I noticed this morning it doesn't happen at lower speeds, only on the highway.

I have the Michelin ATS? Sport? tire (I think I have it right, but not certain). I do not have the run-flats.

Yes then I know exactly what you are talking about, I used to have the same exact thing, it got so annoying I didnt drive at that speed no more. I noticed it 3 months before my transmission failed on me ( I was driving normally one day, at cruising rpms, came to my destination noticed smoke coming under my car, looked underneath and bammmm oil was leaking like out of a faucet, or should i say a huge drain) Long story short I had my transmission replaced by lexus and they just called it a defect. After the transmission replacement I have never heard that sound again. There was a tsb for it, I will try to look. To me it sounded like it was coming from transfer case or transmission. Girl you are lucky I just found the tsb, But i will be complete honest I am not sure if this solves the issue as I have had the transmission replaced with the torque converter

GS350Lexus - it looks like the TSB you posted applies only to GS350 vehicles 2007 and later? My car is a 2006 GS300 - is there anything for this?

Also, I looked at my tires - they are Michelin Pilot AS Sport (had it almost right!).

I certainly hope it's not the transmission!

Thanks!

I noticed this whine noise 2 yrs after I bought my 07GS350 AWD new in 2006. I didn't see the TSB until this year. I had the TSB performed 3 months ago. But it did not do any good.
Instead of whining at 60 MPH, it whines at 55 mp now. lol.

is it AWD or RWD?

How many miles on your car?

How long have you had the car?

Mine is AWD, 88,000 miles, I've had it a year. The hum started just in the past 2 weeks.

I would love to help more, but to be honest it's not going to be easy over the internet. what you're describing could be dozens of things

AWD's somtimes crack exhaust pipes after the catalytic converters.
Tires are always a suspect.

one thing that would help is if you can hear any abnormal noise while the car ISN'T moving. like maybe if you just rev it up a little in park. if it only happens when it's moving, the list of possibilities is very large.

FYI - Realized the sound was occuring while car was specifically going 71, 75 and 80 MPH and appears to be coming from the front of the car (engine area). The sound it a tad louder now so my appointment with the shop is tomorrow morning. I'll let you know what they tell me.

Bad wheel bearing was the diagnosis, and it should be covered by my extended warranty, thank goodness! However, I was also told that all my tires are very unsafe and I need new ones pronto. :-( Now to search the threads for tire suggestions.....
