I was told that the newer cars don't really need to warm up anymore then a couple minutes and that it is better to drive soft to warm up the car rather then just sitting there. Is there any truth behind this? Or is it just a myth to help people from idling as much On cold winter days how long do you warm up your cars?

new cars are not like older car where you have to wait a few minutes to warm them up. you can pretty much start the car, wait a few seconds then leave.
actually starting the car up and driving it (not hard but normal) will actually warm the car up quicker than just sitting idle

By definition of "need", it's true that the car doesn't need it. But it's good to give it a 30sec or so to warm up. Me, I drive slowly to get out of my neighborhood. By than it should be warm enough to get on the highway.

I agree that it isn't absolutely necessary. I've been driving off within 10 seconds of starting my car for 5 years now, with no issues.
One safety-related caveat might be in colder temps (below 40 F or so). Whenever I start my car in the winter and don't let it warm up for a bit, the higher idle makes braking more difficult for the first few minutes of stop and go traffic.

Its not a must but it would benefit the longevity of the motor to give it 1 minute to warm up in cold weather. My cars are in garage and I still warm them up a bit. Its good for oil to warm up along with other fluids before you start driving.
Most people lease cars so they don't care about warming them up. I always buy so it is important to me.

Our cars won't shift into 6th gear until the temperature marker is about two ticks above "C"... I live close to the highway, so on cold days I let it warm up about a minute before driving through the neighborhood. It's good to go by the time I'm at the freeway.

its more like fuel injected cars do not need to be warmed up also a car will warm faster if you drive it.
The warming up a car thing came from the days when cars were still carb'd
the only kind of warm up i do (if you even want to call it that) is i let the car idle for like 30 secs just to get the fluids moving around then im off
