I would leave the headlight on, just heat form the vinyl around it with a card and use an exacto knife to trim it.
I know it may sound ghetto, but if you "just wanted" to see what blacked out looks like you could use electrical tape and if you like it redo in good quality vinyl.

And if you want white trim use the white out tape (for ink pen mistakes) just to see what it would look like first. It's cheap easy to use and will be flat white.
