Replace rear non-ML sub with ML sub?
Well I think my rear decklid sub bit the dust this weekend. I see I can purchase either the standard sub for my vehicle for ~250 or the ML one for ~500. Any reason why the ML sub wouldn't work? Does anyone know if the wiring is the same? Thank you.

I'm sure the hookups are the same, question is are they the same size (diameter), and will the ML operate alright at the lower wattage of the 10 speaker system.....I think it's like half the watts.

It doesn't mean it won't work, it means that depending on the amp design, you'll likely be sending half the power to the ML Sub.
If the amp puts out a 100 watts on a 4 ohm load, the amp will put out 50 watts on a 8 ohm load (using round numbers, I don't know what the factory amp puts out on the sub channel)

The ML sub is DUAL VOICE COIL 4 OHM... that means that it could be run as 8 OHM or 2 OHM... series/parallel.
If you hook up the ML sub in parallel, then you would get more power out of it... IF it is 2 ohm stable. If it is not 2 ohm stable, then you will pop the amp.
If the non-ML design was to bridge 2 regular channels and run them mono... (very likely) then the 2 channels bridged would actually already be 'seeing' 2 ohms on each channel. Thus... no bueno.
What you SHOULD do if you were to get an ML sub, is to get a power amp that is 2 ohm stable mono (maybe around 150w to 200w RMS rating) and use the existing wires as input for the new amp.
That might just be the way to go right there... otherwise, just get the stock sub replacement.
You could get a stock sub and put a power amp on it the same way, but you would want an amplifier optimized for 4 ohms mono (like a 2 channel class a/b amp bridged mono to 4 ohms). Most mono amps are 2 ohm rated, so a mono amp would likely not be optimal for the non-ML sub.
Good luck man.

My wiring diagrams show the stock sub as being dual voice coils at 2.5 ohm nominal impedance per coil. It also shows the ML sub as being single voice coil at 14 ohm nominal impedance. I would not replace the stock sub with an ML sub as the amp will not put out enough power to run it properly.

Wow. Thank you all for the replies! I guess the consensus is to just replace it with the stock sub. I would like a little more bass, so I guess at this point I could just remove it and add a sub in the trunk. Not exactly sure how to go about this so may just replace the stock woofer.
I must say...the stocks system in our GS is pretty good. The front dash speakers get fuzzy with certain loud vocals, but over all I like it. I wish I could figure out why the bass drops out at loud volume levels. The ML systems do not do this.
