also... when most cars have been in an accident the durability of the vehicle goes down... say the car's durability 50/50 from Lexus.. when you get in a car crash and the body panel is re-welded by hand the durability is like 40/50. Hoping there is not a next time for you (knocks on wood), but if you do get in another one, the safety impact might be worst.

If you can part the car off you can make extra money that way too..

slimmsled said he is interested in your side mirrors.
if you have a power window sunshade I will be interested in buying your drop down instrument panel. I need the sundshade button for my car.

Remember everyone. Once the insurance company claims responsibility and decides to total the car. They own the car and any missing parts will have to be compensated for by the owner. You can swap parts out here and there, but the key word is "SWAP". You cannot remove it and leave the car without the parts. If you do, then you will end up getting charged for the removed parts.

For example if you had a aftermarket head unit radio. If you no longer have the original radio to put back in there, but remove the aftermarket one. When the insurance comes to pick up the car, you cant strip out the radio and leave a gaping hole in the dash. They will subtract the missing parts(at full lexus retail value) out of the check they cut you.

What I'm getting at is if someone wants to buy his mirrors, then you will have to send yours back to him so he can put them back on the car. If not, that $25k total loss check the insurance was going to send is now going to be cut down $1000-1500 depending on how much the mirrors cost. Now if you send your old mirrors back, then all will be fine.

Same goes for any other part on the car that you plan on removing. Just make sure you replace it with something back in its place.

Got some terrible news - the adjust says just $11,075 in damages...of course they did not take off the panels, etc.
HERE IS A QUESTION: If the unibody frame is damaged...should I demand the car be totaled?

My bad. Didn't see the bit about it being a 2010... Yeah, that's going to tough to swing I'm afraid... The 2010 is still high 30's in value. Get it fixed by Lexus it'll be fine.... *

Hell, an 07 will fetch 20 given the right mileage.

* all three Lexii in my family are rebuilt cars, since the savings outweighed buying used by a lot... And they drive as any other Lexus would... Just make sure it's repaired properly and go over it with a fine tooth comb when it comes back!

It means the rear impact is not strong enough to deploy the airbags.
So the car frames should be OK. It will be more than adjuster's $11K when they open up.
Since this is big repair, I would bring the car to the dealer associated body shop.

Thanks, you guys for the info.
Yes, I took it to the dealer's collision center and asked they use only Lexus parts. It is comforting to know that rebuilt cars still behave the same as new/used.
I want to get a couple good years out of this car and once it hits 75K miles, I will gladly sell it and move onto the new-look GS (love that mean face).
I'll update as to how well the reparis go...thanks to all, again!

Yeah if the door's opening/closing has been affected as it sounds like it has, there will be some frame/unibody pulling time required (which is probably included in the $11k)......from that price I assume they are not painting the whole car, but it would be nice since I would not want a car with just the front third and back third refinished.....

Well, I would not either. But as 01LEXPL advised...I will just have to go over the car with a fine toothed comb and be critical. Hopefully, the dealer will do a fine job.

Germain Collision of Columbus called me to tell me the insurance company has decided to total the car...I hope that Mark Levinson system held its value!
Let's see what they come up with...

Any idea on next cars? Should I go with a 2013 GS or ES? I really hated the small trunk of the GS but loved that sporty drive.
I am afraid to kick the tires on BMW or Audi.

Good to hear!

I would go with a 2014 GS since it has features the 2013 didn't come with at the time.

that's good to know...I thought the 2014 was essentially the same as the new generation 2013. It all depends on where I get a good deal...

The 2014 GS has a few features optional over the '13 including power mirrors and trunk, LED fogs on the luxury package, climate concierge (auto heated/ventilated seat controls), color HUD, and Siri Eyes Free. That's all I can remember off the top of my head. If you don't particularly care for those I'm sure you can get a killer deal on a '13 that's still on the lot, especially with December to Remember discounts.

You have a wonderful car, my friend. One of the best set of wheels around!
