I called Lexus and they said repair is on a case by case basis.

I'll have to get the mirror inspected by the dealer first.

Let's put Lexus customer service to the test, and see whether they force me to look at this speckled/scratched mirror, or if they comp the replacement.

It's hard to detect at first because it looks like dust and smears...... until you actually try to clean the mirror and find out it's permanently f'd up.

Also, considering that 99.99% of cars don't have this mirror problem, it would extremely embarrassing if Lexus makes me live with this after admitting there's a defect.

Are you under an extended warranty? If not, good luck.. Extremely interested in how that goes. As others have mentioned there is a TSB for it, but it's not a recall per se. I'm in Northern CA, so I don't buy that "it only happens in hot weather" BS.

I'm extremely happy with the results I received from sending it to Scott at Radar-mirror.com for $100 and a brand new mirror cell.

pman6 what year do you have? $100 isn't bad. Much cheaper than a new mirror.

I have a 2007.

It is unknown how long the $100 fix will last, and a 1 year warranty does not give me confidence.

Also, it's just a matter of principle.
Lexus knowingly gave us a bad part.. a part which does not go bad in any other car except the 3 in this TSB. That's the embarrassing aspect of it.

Without the help of this forum, I would never have found TSB information.
TSBs give customers options, but the average joe doesn't even know they exist.
For instance, without the low-dust brake pad TSB, people would think that a crapload of brake dust was normal. But knowing about the brake pad TSB gives me a choice whether to replace them.
If people knew about the mirror TSB, I'm sure many would have chosen to preemptively replace it.

I do hope Lexus makes it right, since they have done so for others who were out of warranty.
And I hope my service adviser is a competent advocate and negotiator and will fight for me.
I will try to push the "safety issue" as mentioned earlier. Whenever the sun directly hits the mirror, the spots are very apparent, and you can say it partially obscures the view.

I understand your feelings, but in my case the $100 fix was probably faster (and probably cheaper, depending on Lexus), than having to go through all that. I did the fix and one year later it still looks like new. It is a small price to pay to have the problem resolved immediately. Even if I have to pay $100 every 5 years.....it still beats the $1600 Lexus wants for a new mirror....

It won't take any extra time. I am due for the vvt actuator gear recall, so I want them to replace it then.

The part is $600 online.

My Prediction is they will chalk it up to wear and tear. And it is $1600 at the dealer, and if you raise a stink you may get Lexus to pay half, which would still be $800 out of your pocket, plus the labor.....

Either way good luck. But we gave you solutions on what to do if you want it fix for cheap.

It's hilarious.

These Gentex mirrors typically cost $300 from amazon and such. You just have to change over the wire harness.

Lexus normally charges $1715, of which lexus covers $800.

Holy 500% profit margin. I can live with it. I'd rather have some good meals than flush that money down the toilet.

pman, folks that have sent their mirrors out never had the problem again.

FWIW: I got a NEW mirror from Lexus, and it never came back, I don't know why it happens on these cars. It took TWO mirrors though for it to go away, I think they tried to send me away with another mirror that had less but still apparent bubbling on the mirror overlay.

Can't believe dealer charges $1500 for a mirror.
I got mine fixed for about $120.
