Default 06 GS430 HID and Navigation Questions

So my grandpa has a 2006 GS430 and wanted me to do some research on a few things about it for him.

First of all, when driving with the headlights on, one of the drivers side bulbs(not sure what one, although I don't think it's the highbeam because I think he said it happens when just the headlights are on, without brights) will simply turn off randomly. Could turn off after an hour, could turn off after 5 minutes. Now, I did some research and this can be the bulb(obviously...) or it could be the ballast. Some posts recommended switching the bulb(s) to the other side of the car, and see if the issue persists. If the same bulb goes out, then it's the bulb itself, but if the new bulb in that same position goes out, it would be the ballast correct?

Also, while my dad and I were looking at the wiring for the bulbs, we just had a question about it.

That's a link to some pictures I took. Does that look like the stock system? We were curious because it didn't seem like the stock one should just be laying in there like that in the first two pictures, we figured it would have a better spot to be secure or sit in. We could be wrong though, just wondering.

Finally, I need some advice about the navigation system. Currently, it has version 4.02 on it...which is like what it shipped with if I remember correctly from the looking I did. Now, according to Lexus's website, you can get an update to the latest version for around $170. Now, I noticed with the current one, you have to select the different zones in the U.S. for example, you can't simply enter an address anywhere in the country, you have to select the proper zone first. Is this still the case with the latest update, or does it actually update the software too in addition to new roads? I'm asking because my grandpa already has a standalone Garmin with free map updates for life, but if the built in one's software gets better with each update he would like to use that. what do you guys think? Would you pay the $170 to update to the latest version or just use a standalone GPS if you had one?

That stuff is not stock. Just took a look under the hood of my 2006 GS430.

Yes, if you move the bulb and the problem remains on the same side, it's not the bulb, but it might be the ballast or some other intermittent connection. Who knows what's gone on there.

I did not update the Lexus GPS. I keep the Garmin with lifetime free maps with me as a backup. I suspect the system still requires selecting the zone. I did the updates for 2 other systems last year with similar NAV (Fujitsu) and nothing visibly changed.

So late on reply, but this could just be an HID kit for some other bulbs. It could be your high beams or your foglights...

Your factory system is built into the headlight, and the headlight bulbs are a PITA to install (simply because it's sideways, it takes some repositioning to get it correctly sat in also).

Like you said, swapping side will definitely help you determine if it's the bulb or ballast.
