Are you replacing your oil at 5k miles or more?

My friend's 2006 GS300 burns quite a bit of oil. He says he has to check his oil level regularly every 3 months and top up.

The 2006 are known to burn through 3-4 quarts of oil per 3,000 miles. I would advise him to change the oil instead of topping it off and bump the OCI to 3k instead of 5k.

Default Piston rings for sure !!

I had the same problem in the previous 4gr .. i have changed the whole entire engine now iam experiencing the same ****ing problem now in the new 3ge ... It losing 2 quarts every 700miles .. it's unbelievable.. now i will rebuild the same 3gr , so which rings i have to buy (open budget) to prevent this issue permanently?

Check for cylinder wall wear first. Replacing rings won't help if the cylinder walls are worn to the point where the rings are not contacting the cylinder walls. I would order the updated rings from the dealership. They should have the latest revision where as ordering from a part store, who knows what revision they have.

Nice piston ring set you got there Lexus lol. Actual image from a parts site

Excessive oil burning is due to carbon build up which also affects piston rings. A replacement engine often has the same issue.

How often were you replacing the oil? If you were replacing at 5k miles then I would go to 3k miles. What you can do is soak the pistons in parts cleaner. To me it sounds like the piston rings are clogged or it could be worn cylinder walls. But a common issue is people who change there oil 5000 or more miles. Its always better to change the oil ahead to avoid having dirty engine internals.

I used to only do 9K miles/year on my 2007 GS350 so I was changing oil every 3-4 months typically and still ended up with an oil burning engine by 90K. Now I'm at 125K miles and burning a quart every 600 miles it seems.

Possibly look into a Jasper remanufactured engine. They have a video on YouTube about making some improvements to the 2GR (well, the 2GR-FE, but hopefully the same to the FSE models) in terms of wider piston skirts with a teflon coating, and larger and more oil drain back holes in the pistons.
