2007 GS350, 195k miles, dead cylinder
Interesting, we have been dealing with the excessive oil consumption on our car for well over 80k miles. It recently started getting worse, 6-7 quaarts per oil change, but it raaan well. It would only blow smoke out the pipe if I really got on it with high RPMs.
Last week we drove from So-cal to Vegas. It was 104 degrees plus on the way there, but ran very well. On one of the days, while gettin gonto the freway and excelerating pretty hard, the whole dash lit up, and I saw th etemp gauge skyrocket past the H level. I pulled over right away, and when I looked, I saw antifreeze splashed all over the engine and steam coming fomo theh overfloow. WHen I took the radiator cap off, it fell into pieces.
I allowed the car to cool a bit and put some water in the engine that we had in the car. This gave us a chance to make it to the gas station, only 1/4 mile away, to refill the water, then to Napa to get a new raadiator cap, another 1/4 mile.
The car ran great the rest of our time there and all the way home. A couple days after getting home. my wife called and told me the check engine light went on. I pulled th ecodes and it said low temp warning or something like that. I figured maybe the thermostat was stuck open and cleared the codes. I figured I would order one online and install later in the week.
The following day, wife calls again...car won't start...and if it does, it runs really rough. We towed it home, and found there is no compression in the driver's side rear cylinder. bummer. Either a valve issue, piston/ rings or head gasket.
I would imagine the heat had something to do with advancing the engine to it's demise, but not really sure.
At any rate, I have decided to replace the engine with a used one...can get a 85k miles engine for $2,000. We love the car, and even though it has a lot of miles on it, it has really been care free. (with the exception of the LCD touchscreen I replaced a few years ago and an alternator I just replaced a few months ago).
My brother-in-laws do body work and have access to a lift so we are going to attempt the exchange ourselves. In looking at it, it doesn't look to be too bad. Does anyone know if any special tools are needed to R&R the engine? I have looked all over the place and I can not find any information other than it looks like the engine will come out of the bottom based on the picutres I have seen.
I am very mechanically inclined and have swapped out a few motors in the past, but this will be my first newer model engine swap.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Its a pretty straight forward job, may want to get the engine lift hooks to attach to the engine, to hoist, not required. When i did mine i didnt have a lift and pretty much pulled off the front end and pulled the engine and trans out at the same time. Tools mainly used are 10mm, 12mm, 14mm and 17mm sockets. I do recommend if you get a used engine to check for carbon and have them cleaned before installing
carbon build up on intake valves
more carbon on intake
Painted the headlights
Also installed clear projector lens
