Default 2006 GS RR drive axle losing grease

Had my vehicle inspected today. I get it done at a Toyota dealership as Lexus Is 60 miles away. It passed inspection but they told me my R.R drive axle is losing grease. And something about boot straps. I asked the mechanic what that meant and he told me the axle might need to be replaced. I should check with Lexus. What?? Has anyone ever heard of this? What would an axle replacement cost? What are boot straps? Can it just be repaired?

TIA
LH

He probably means the clamps around the ends of the boots are letting grease ot. If the boot is not ripped, it can be replaced, but if the boot has a rip, it'll need to be replaced. Replacing an axle is usually what happens when all the grease comes out or lots of dirt and water gets in. If it just needs the clamps, I would get them changed sooner than later as its the cheapest option.

thanks.. his actual writing was "R.R. Drive axle losing grease @ boot clamps". Not sure if that changes your explanation any.

Agreed. Get the boot strap and or boot replaced before more dirt gets in and contaminates the axle.
