Died while warming up, now won't crank
Today I had my car outside warming up in the brutal cold for 10-15 minutes. It started up fine. When I went outside to head to work, the car was off and now it won't start. At first it turned over a few times, but wouldn't start. After a few attempts it wouldn't even turn over. I waited 20-30 minutes and it would turn over again, but not start. Then I waited another 20 minutes or so and everything electrical is completely dead. I'm trickle charging the battery now to see how it reacts. The check engine light, VCS message are on now. Also, even when the battery wasn't completely dead, the brake was very hard to depress when I attempted the push button start. It depressed enough for the green light on the button, but it's noticeably stiffer. Any ideas before I take this to a shop?

Let us know after charging the battery.
As far as the brake pedal getting harder to depress, that is normal when the car is off. The brake pedal will go back to normal after you start the car up.

Could a dead battery cause a car to die while warming up in the driveway? I was always under the impression that the battery was used simply to start the car, but I'm no mechanic.

Yes it can if the alternator isn't doing it's job.

I got home and the battery was still completely dead. I actually looked at the battery and somehow it’s the original battery. I bought a new battery, installed it and the electronics and lights are working fine. When I go to start the car absolutely nothing happens now. It literally doesn’t make a sound. I really appreciate the help, man.

Check the fuse. It may have popped. I don't think there is a fusible link on the positive battery cable.

Sooo, about an hour after I attempted to start my car I went back out and it started up like nothing was wrong. I drove it around the block and then drove it to work this morning and it's completely fine. I really didn't think it could just be the battery, but I guess I was wrong. Thanks for all of your willingness to help guys. It is much appreciated.
