Exclamation 07 GS 350 Not Starting (Weird noise) Starter?

Hello,

Yesterday all of a sudden my car is not starting, when trying to start I hear this strange noise (See recording) and after the attempt to start (exactly after this noise) there is the check engine ABS and traction control with CHECK VSC. Code pulled is the P0335 Camshaft position sensor "A" circuit.

The noise comes from the left side of the engine (Driver side) exactly where the started is located. The noise is like if the pinions of the starter are not engaging or are completely worn. Any ideas? it happened yesterday I will try to see a mechanic today hopefully its only the starter and not the flywheel or anything worse.

Sounds like the starter shaft gear isnt sliding properly, possibly its rusted or not getting good connection.

Pull the starter out lube the shaft, install new brushes oem there like $14-20 bucks. Test it outside of the car make sure it engages, slap it back in.

Thanks ibidu! I will try to do that, but damn removing that starter is hard, its in the most uncomfortable position it could be! I think I saw it below the exhaust manifold on driver side.

The brushes are in that smaller cylinder on the right side. I think you replace that entire piece. Brushes are sealed in there I think

The smaller cylinder is the starter solenoid. The brushes are in the starter motor (large cylinder).

Solved!! Took the starter to a small shop to recondition, the sound was caused by internal pinions being bad as well as the brushes, cleaned them good and replaced all parts with new ones. Charged me 70 bucks + 60 to the guys who mounted it back. Sweet engine starting smooth again.

Thanks eveyone specially ibidu for the precise diagnosis.
