Default GS350 Midpipe exhaust repair

These are like $1500 wholesale if you want to the whole unit - And who knows at the dealer. There are some 48 State legal ones on Rockauto for about $400, but not good for NY.

Got them done at Pete's Auto Parts in Schenectady, NY. Best in the area.

Price is about 75-$80ish per side. Only one needed. Old pipe rotted by the heat shield clamps. also some weak spots by the fiberglass in the shield.. Other pipe still in decent shape. Damn, is this car quiet now!

Yup its the clamps, heat shields, and the fiberglass packing that plagues the AWD exhaust systems. I keep telling people with AWD remove the heat shields on the mid pipes keeps all they do is trap moisture, that eventual eats up and rots the exhaust tubes inside of them. Especially with northern cars that see snow, and salt.

Muffler place said they never saw anything like that (with fiberglass). Maybe Lexus wanted to drop noise 1 or 2 db

Dang, not a bad deal at all! So glad I don't deal with much salt out here.

Hmm. we don't get much snow but they do put down the salt from time to time, maybe I should consider removing the heat shields. Have you done it? Got any pics?

The dude in the shop used a acetylene cutter to get the shield bolts off by the resonator/cats. YMMV, there may be other ways, maybe even it could be twisted off, it is thin metal.. Once that is off it just peels off, I think it is folded.

P.S. - It rots for two reasons - dissimilar metals between the clamp and pipe and the fiberglass. Make sure to wear breathing protection when you remove it. It makes a mess. Even in non salt areas, there could be cathodic corrosion and holes. I have a Ford Explorer with a very similar heat shield (but no fiberglass) on the Y pipe and it rots where the shield contacts the pipe. Had it fixed there too.

Yes I removed both and stopped the rusting a long time ago. If I remember its 10mm on the clamps, some I had a hard time removing and just peeled them off you can use tin snips or an angle grinder.

100% remove them if you own an AWD. It would be better to scuff and maybe paint the area with high temp paint to help stop rusting. Its a moisture trap!
