The ES is like a limo in the back seat. Does not even matter if the front seat are all the way back.

Really?

I did not cross-shop that model when looking for my GS--my assumption was that the ES would be nearly the same interior space (front and back) as the GS

The ES is the biggest FWD sedan on the market. There’s 40 inch of rear leg room. That’s more than a typical 7 series BMW

Yes you can get in the back seat and cross your legs. Got to love the ES for that. If you move the front seats from the all the way back position forward some then it gets really crazy leg room in addition, even more so. Almost feels like a executive limo back there. That's why I said the GS back seats sucks. But they are different purpose sedans.

Yeah, it’s roomy for the kids, and sporty me.
